Brunswick-to-the-Ocean Trail Corridor
Description

Overwhelming community support in Brunswick, combined with grants from the Land for Maine's Future Board and contributions from state agencies, environmental groups and private foundations, has facilitated purchase of 112 acres of open space and recreational land. Project funding has totaled more than $525,000, in addition to the town council.s previously allotted $225,000.

The wild grounds are located next to the Town Commons and provide a protected open space that residents frequent for walking, running, skiing, bicycling, blueberry picking and wildlife watching. The land also provides for a trail corridor that is well maintained and that will soon be accompanied by additional side trails, all of which will receive ongoing maintenance. The trail corridor that is protected by this acquired acreage is the only remaining one in the vicinity and extends from the Bowdoin College athletic fields through the Town Commons and out to Middle Bay.

The undeveloped land will help buffer the historic Commons from development, such as the Brunswick Naval Air Station, that has already stolen away much of the original acreage.

Goal

Protect and double the amount of open space around the Town Commons.
